FRAGMENTS & FABRICATIONS

April 13 - May 31, 2023

Fragments & Fabrications explores reconstruction, deconstruction, and transformation. It brings together artists from across the United States whose work explores these themes both visually and conceptually. The topics explored are varied and numerous — from environmental destruction to the fabrication of online identities to alchemical metamorphosis — and the materials utilized range from concrete to tissue paper.

Abstraction, both as a process and as a concept, is central to the exhibition. Viewers often have firm preconceived notions of what ‘abstract’ means in art, but it is far broader than the image we conjure up in our heads. Abstraction involves an inherent act of deconstruction and reconstruction; it is the process of simplifying and manipulating visual information to produce something new. There is no limit to the different ways an artist can approach that process, and all of the artists in this exhibition do approach it in distinct ways and to varying degrees.

Artists included in the exhibition are Justin Favela, Jack Henry, Melissa Huang, Nnenna Okore, Kim Piotrowski, Claire Scherzinger, and Zipporah Camille Thompson.
